Hi, we are Erica, Benjamin, Carlijn, Josh, Noor, and Zugeng. We are working together for a joint
interdisciplinary project with the Dutch medical company Layco. Together, we aim to enhance the
accessibility of vacuum extraction in LMICs. Layco's project involves creating a cost-effective,
reusable vacuum extractor called the 'Vela.' Our role is to explore the potential for local Vela
production in Uganda using recycled plastics. This approach reduces costs, benefits the local
economy, and promotes environmental sustainability. We collaborate closely with Eco Brixs, a
Ugandan recycling company, to craft the Vela primarily from locally sourced recycled plastics.
