We are now halfway through our time in Ghana, and the project is progressing well. During our visits to various schools, we have seen firsthand where things go wrong in terms of sanitation and hygiene. We have spoken with schoolchildren and teachers to gain a clear understanding of the current situation and to hear what improvements they would like to see.
Our conversations brought forward many insights that we have incorporated into our work. For example, we connected with the maintenance team, which has since visited all the schools to repair broken facilities. At the same time, we worked closely with the local community to develop a maintenance plan.
The first version of the maintenance plan is now ready and includes the following components:
- A clear explanation of cleaning procedures.
- A daily cleaning schedule.
- A lesson plan for schoolchildren, explaining the importance of good hygiene and the correct use of toilets.
- Posters at sanitary facilities for visualization.
- A guide for schools explaining why proper maintenance and cleaning are essential.
- A plan for the supply of toilet paper, soap, cleaning products, and menstrual products.
This week, we are introducing the maintenance plan at several pilot schools. During these visits, we will also test the lesson plan to see how it is received in practice. In the following weeks, we will return a few more times to evaluate how the plan is working and make any necessary adjustments.
With these steps, we aim to achieve lasting change in sanitation and hygiene, in close collaboration with the local community and schools. We look forward to what the coming weeks will bring!
