Weaving with plastic waste with Chako in Tanzania

Location: Kidichi Kijichi, Zanzibar, Tanzania |

Hello everyone! We are Ali Sami, Sam, Lise, and Sophie, four students from TU Delft. Over the next two months, we will be in Zanzibar, working with CHAKO to launch a new product line. Our project focuses on upcycling plastic waste by melting it down and weaving it into unique products like lamps. Plastic and glass waste are significant issues on the island, as there is no formal waste management system, and the local population does not yet take the problem seriously. This results in a heavily polluted environment. CHAKO addresses this issue by purchasing plastic and glass waste and transforming it into upcycled products for tourists. Through this project, we aim to contribute to environmental sustainability while creating new opportunities for the local community.
