UPDATE II: Sanitation and health on schools in Ghana

Hi!

After a wonderful Christmas holiday, we’ve already entered the final phase of our time in Ghana—time really flies! Since our last update, we’ve made significant progress on our project, though we’ve also encountered some setbacks, particularly with the planning and communication surrounding the school visits.

We faced challenges in arranging toilet supplies for the pilot schools, which caused delays. Additionally, the planned school visit day was postponed multiple times due to unforeseen circumstances. When we finally visited the schools, it turned out there had been a miscommunication between our Ghanaian colleague and the schools, and we arrived during exam time. This meant there was unfortunately no opportunity for our visit.

We managed to resolve this by hanging the posters in advance and having a brief meeting with the cleaning staff to go over the cleaning schedule. A week later, we returned to introduce the lesson plan to the children together with the teachers. Thankfully, the maintenance plan was well received, and the posters are now displayed nicely at the various locations.

In the remaining 2.5 weeks of our stay in Ghana, we plan to visit the pilot schools two more times. During these visits, we’ll review the current condition of the toilets and, if necessary, make adjustments to the maintenance plan based on how it works in practice.

We’re looking forward to completing these final steps and wrapping up our work here in a meaningful way.
