Bali Pantai | Measurements

As promised last time, we will give you guys an update on our plastic measurement experiences.

Let’s first start with our river measurements from last week. The main goal of the river measurements is to find out how much plastic from the rivers on South Bali will end up in the Indian Ocean. These measurements will be performed in multiple regimes namely, in a dry regime and a wet regime after heavy rainfall. By these measurements in various rivers within the Southern coastline a relation between rain and plastic transportation can eventually be made. Now we are still in the dry regime and as expected we have not encountered shocking amounts of plastic yet. However, these measurements during the dry season are essential for the evaluation of the wet season measurements.

After our river measurements conducted last week, this week was all about the beaches in Bali. The enormous amounts of plastic washing onto the beaches of Bali are of great concern to local businesses and communities. To get a clear picture of this aspect, we are going to monitor three different beaches: a remote beach, a beach near a river mouth and an urban beach. At these beaches an area of at least 100m long will be marked in which all garbage will be collected. This will give us insight on the composition of the waste that ends up on Bali’s beaches. The composition is of importance as this can be compared with future accumulated litter on the same stretch of beach. By combining this data with our findings in the river certain assumptions could eventually be made on where the waste originates from.
